WHO in Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences: https://lnkd.in/exjFAc2A"This paper explores John Bowlby’s foundational contributions to attachment theory, particularly his fascination with ‘separation’ and its impact on child development. Tracing the origins of Bowlby’s interest to his personal experiences and his exposure to ideas of mental hygiene and child guidance in the 1930s, it underscores the alignment of his ideas with key figures in the English school of psychoanalysis. The central narrative of this paper unfolds during Bowlby’s 1950 WHO research trip, investigating orphaned and separated children in Europe and the USA. Utilizing archival materials from the Wellcome Library in London, the authors offer unique insights into Bowlby’s journey, highlighting his evolving views on mother-child separation through interactions with his American colleagues. This comprehensive exploration sheds light on Bowlby’s pioneering work, emphasizing the American influence on his ideas, and the evolving theoretical framework that continues to shape our understanding of child development and attachment today."

Fathers, whose identities as a parent are often touted as “essential”, yet are “invisible” and understudied within the context of work, are the focus of our recent study published at Journal of Organizational Behavior (along with Kimberly French, Christine Ohannessian, and Howard Tennen). We theorize and qualify two contrasting pathways linking fathers' daily work experiences and interactions with their adolescent children: a lasting depletion pathway and a delayed compensation pathway. Data are from 96 father-mother-adolescent triads. Our paper captures child-rearing in a two-parent household as a joint effort, coordinated among the couple to accommodate both children’s needs and the parents’ work obligations. The research was supported by a grant from National Science Foundation (NSF).https://lnkd.in/ef3_Fw2j

Important article in the Journal of Child Psychotherapy by Celine Maroudas, Hadas Wiseman and Judith Harel, looking at the period of 'latency' (aka middle childhood) in psychoanalytic theory, and moving beyond a theory of stability and structure, towards seeing primary school aged children as the constantly-changing, in flux young people they are. (The article is open access at the moment so you can download it)

I recently had the privilege of presenting my research titled "Securely Attached but Lonely? Exploring Loneliness, Psychological Distress, and Attachment Styles Among Young Adults" at the esteemed UG-PG National Conference on Psychological Research: Current and Future Directions. The study also delves into the intriguing prevalence of loneliness among individuals with secure attachment styles, unraveling the intricate dynamics between attachment and psychological well-being in the context of young adulthood.

Background: Play is among the most frequently observed distorted behaviors in victims of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Terr's (1981) studies helped to describe this behavioral distortion as post-traumatic child's play (PTCP). This study aimed to evaluate whether child victims of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) engaging in semi-structured play present the markers of post-traumatic child's play (PTCP) during the administration of the Manchester Child Attachment Story Task (MCAST), whose playful stories activate the attachment system. Methods: The sample comprised 17 child victims of ACEs (mean age = 6.76). Children were evaluated using the Manchester Child Attachment Story Task. Results: The analysis of the play clearly revealed the presence of markers associated with the characteristics of the post-traumatic play described by Terr (1981), namely, repetition, revisiting, hyperarousal, and danger. In particular, the intrusiveness dimension was observed, which can be identified in the post-traumatic play by the presence of recurrent memories, dreams, and dissociative symptoms. Conclusions: Post-traumatic play is characterized by repetition, containing aspects, scenes, or sequences of the traumatic event, expressed explicitly or symbolically.D'Elia D, Carpinelli L, Savarese G.
